Obituary for Bernice Winnifred Swifte (Day)
Peacefully, on January 13, 2020, Bernice passed away at the Misericordia Health Centre following a short illness.
Bernice was predeceased by her beloved husband, Allan and her parents, Sydney and Winnifred Day.
She leaves to cherish her memory, children Donna McElroy, Glen Swifte and Colleen Swifte. She also leaves grandchildren, Shaun McElroy, Erika Blanchard (Aaron) and Erin Roy (Justin). Bernice was a loving great grandmother to Gage Harper, Jaxon and Jessie-Lynn Blanchard. She was looking so forward to meeting two more great grandchildren who will be born in the spring. Bernice is also survived by her brother Garfield (Garth) Day and her niece, Kim Hale of Victoria, BC.
Bernice was born in Winnipeg, MB and lived here all of her life. She was raised in the west end of the city and received her education there, graduating from Daniel McIntyre High School. Some of her school mates became lifelong friends and she was still attending a yearly luncheon with friends from elementary school.
In her early working years she worked as a stenographer for Duff Roblin at Roblin Motors and then moved to Great West Life. She always spoke fondly of these workplaces and was particularly proud when her granddaughter Erin began her career at Great West Life.
Bernice and Allan were married on October 17, 1953. Bernice later became a stay at home mom to her children. In 1974, when her eldest child, Donna, turned 18, she very courageously decided to rejoin the work force. She joined Statistics Canada in 1974 and retired in 1993, having enjoyed her time there.
Bernice was also a member of several social and benevolent clubs, most notably she was a long time member and past president of Ganderettes and was a member of the Ladies Auxillary of Khartum Temple. She also volunteered her time at the gift shop in Misericordia Hospital and was a longtime member of Christ Church (Anglican). She and Allan quietly contributed to many charities and truly set an example of what it was to be a Christian.
Most of all, she loved her family and showed us over and over again that there was no problem, big or small, that she couldn’t remedy or help with. We will miss her unconditional love forever but it gives us comfort to know that she is now with our Dad and they will never be apart again.
