Cory Malcolm Evans
It is with great sadness and terrible pain that we announce Cory, aged 68, passed away on January 15, 2021. Cory passed peacefully with his wife, Doris by his bedside.
Cory was predeceased by his parents, Stan and Violet, and sister Dianne (Nick). Cory is survived by his wife, Doris, children, Nancy (Bill), and Jordan (Margaret), brothers, Garry, (Pat), Murray (Lei Anne), extended family and dear friends.
Close friends and family describe Cory as ‘not your typical macho guy’, yet he was never intimidated. He was accepted by folks from all walks of life and easily made friends. Cory was always up for anything. He cared deeply for his siblings and was completely unselfish. Never one to be the center of attention, Cory exuded a level of contentment that made him a welcome addition to any gathering. His quirky comments and dry humour certainly left an impression.
Cory moved to Winnipeg in 1973, where he met the love of his life and began his career as a hair stylist. After a whirlwind romance, which included a trip to Vegas, Doris said yes in 1975. They planned and held a small wedding then honeymooned in Vancouver. Their starter home on Enfield ended up being the start of their family as well.
Desire for a bigger yard for their family of four led them to move in 1984 to Ferndale, their almost forever home. They had the yard of their dreams, and Cory always made time for family games of catch, Frisbee and badminton. The winter months drew them to the river, a short walk away, where they enjoyed tobogganing together and ice skating.
Highlights of Cory’s time on Ferndale include establishing lifelong friendships, annually planting his garden, proudly maintaining the flowerbeds, bushes and manicured lawn, renovating and upgrading the home, cooking and cleaning for his family and guiding his children through their formative years with his gentle, loving nature.
Cory also enjoyed road trips with Doris and spending time at the family cabin at Oak Lake. Cory was a great lover of music and went out to see his younger brother, Murray’s band perform whenever he could.
Though he cherished his years of building bonds with clients while clipping and styling hair, Cory spoke fondly of his second career with the maintenance team at St. Charles Country Club. He woke before the birds and worked tirelessly in the sand traps at the prestigious golf course. He was often seen on all fours, meticulously scouring the bunker for any inconsistencies. This led to Cory being affectionately nick named, C-Dog.
Retirement afforded him many hours of reading, gardening, and relaxing in his favorite spot, a cushion on the floor next to his burning wood stove. He kept up his barber skills and made time for his closest friends and long-standing clients, offering a chair in his basement and even taking his toolkit on house calls. Cory also enjoyed a few road trips with Doris, heading West to visit family and friends.
Further into retirement, after 34 years on Ferndale, Cory and Doris adopted the country life, moving to Ste. Anne, just minutes from his daughter, son in law, and step grandchildren, Michael and Calvin. Without an indoor wood stove, preparing for, building and tending to outdoor bonfires quickly became his favorite pastime.
Cory enjoyed many social gatherings by his bonfire in his final year of life. His son and daughter in law kept their camper close by and spent weekends at a time throughout the spring, summer and fall. He met so many new friends and spent so many hours with family. Even though all hoped it was the first of many, the family remains incredibly grateful for the time spent together.
Cory cherished his wife and children beyond measure and was overjoyed in welcoming Bill and Margaret into the family. The other love of his life was Charlie, his adored rescue dog, which he doted on daily.
