Obituary for Merle Eleanor Howes (Luck)

Merle Eleanor Luck Howes died on October 20, 2021 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in her ninety-fifth year.

Born in Toronto, Ontario on August 23, 1927 to Norville and Maude Sawdon Luck, Merle moved with her parents to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island in the early 1930s. Though they returned to Toronto at the start of WW II, she considered PEI to be the home of her heart, making many return visits, into her nineties.

After graduating from Lawrence Park Collegiate, she entered the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, receiving her M.D. degree in 1951. She married William Hay “Bill” Howes in Toronto, Ontario on October 24, 1953, celebrating their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary before Bill’s death in 2019. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son-in-law, Richard Halliday, in 2018.

Bill and Merle began their lives together in Muskoka, moved to Niagara Falls, and then to Toronto. They eventually became the owners of the Badjeros General Store. Upon retirement, they moved to Clarksburg, Ontario, and then Collingwood, before relocating to Winnipeg.

A founding member of Parkwoods United Church in Don Mills, she was later an active member of Grace United Church in Thornbury, Ontario, and attended Charleswood United Church in Winnipeg.

Merle was a wonderful mother to sons Craig (Sara Collins) and Wynn (Sharon Grehan Howes), and daughter Helen Halliday (Richard); a loving grandmother to Seth Howes (Linda Langness), and Austin (Chynna Ševerdija) and Douglas Halliday; and a proud great-grandmother to Maeva, Ellie, Eliot, and Wellington.

Interment will take place at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Toronto in 2022.

The family would like to thank Richard Rosin Funeral Director, Ltd of Winnipeg for their assistance in making arrangements.

Donations in Merle’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, the YMCA-YWCA, or Grace United Church, Thornbury, Ontario.
