Obituary for Verlie Fitzgerald (Boles)

We are sad to announce Verlie’s passing. She is survived by a family she loved, and was loved by dearly; her husband Bruce of 61 years and their three children, Scott and his wife Karen, Susan and her two children Amberr and JT, Sara-Lynn and her husband Jay and their children Cale, Carson, and Emma Joba, and Kirsten and Kaitlyn Switzer and also by her sister-in-law June Rajchevich and cousins Bryan and Donna McDonald, three honorary siblings.

Mom was born in Carberry, Manitoba on September 7, 1936 to Alfred and Joyce Boles. Despite being an only child and having wistful longings for a sibling, she felt that in addition to her family she was also blessed with a spiritual family of Jehovah’s Witnesses, which provided many life-long friendships. She never lacked for love, compassion and support, for which she was immensely grateful. She was guided by the values and beliefs of her faith and looked forward to a resurrection where she would once again enjoy her faith, family and friends eternally.

Mom was always excited for family time. There were pancake breakfasts and chicken dinners on Sunday, road trips, camping, beach time, and winter vacations with Dad after retirement. She had fond memories of Florida, their retirement cruise to Alaska and time on the West Coast with Scott.

Mom was a woman of great integrity and character, having a deep empathy and compassion for those around her. She liked to get things done, gave more than she received, and always reminded us of how important it was to be kind.

We have fond memories of Mom’s many interests. Ceramics, paper tole, documenting our family history, curling and the Jays were a few of her loves. She was also a skilled seamstress. One of our family photos is of all of us in dresses and suits that she hand made.
She created beautiful things.

We will grieve her loss and the warmth she provided us but what will endure is the gratitude of a family blessed with a wife, mother and grandmother who was without peer and who made our lives so much better because of who she was and who she encouraged us to be.

Our family is grateful for the phenomenal care mom received from CancerCare, Palliative Care and home care staff. Their respect and compassion was immeasurable.
